Signing your Will is a big and exciting step into adulting like a, well, adult. Congratulations for getting this far. We offer a free Will which has a few places that you and your witnesses will need to sign. First of all, get your hands on that…

Now, let’s go through it step by step…


Step one

  • Write out your full name and surname as it appears on your ID book after “of”.

  • Write our your SA Identity number as it appears in your ID book. Check, double check and check it again.

Step two

  • After the word “appoint”, write out the full name and surname of your beneficiary as it appears in their ID book.

  • Write out their Identity number as it appears in their ID book. Check, double check and check it again.

Step three

  • After the word “appoint”, write out the full name and surname of your executor as it appears in their ID book.

  • Write out their Identity number as it appears in their ID book. Check, double check and check it again.

Step four

  • Add in the city or town and the province where you’re signing your Will.

  • Add in the date at which you’re signing it.

  • example: Thus done and executed at Cape Town in the Western Cape Province on this the 3rd day of May in the year 2020.

Step five

  • You need two witnesses to actually witness you signing your Will. Don’t fill it out beforehand - they must actually see you signing your Will.

  • They must be over the age of 14 and, in a court of law, should be able to give evidence competently if the need arose. If possible, choose adults who you can trust and who understand the seriousness of a Will signing.

  • Witness 1 must sign their signature on the line.

  • Witness 2 must sign their signature on the line.

  • If you’re signing the Will, you are the testator. Sign on the line next to that word.

  • Both pages of the Will must be signed.
